Guintoli makes it to the podium at Monza

May 13, 2013

AXO has played a key role in the fourth World SBK round, held in Monza, and finished the Italian weekend with its flagship rider Sylvain Guintoli on podium in Race 2 and Jeremy Guarnoni runner up in the Stock 1000.

In both races the four riders – Laverty, Guintoli, Melandri and Sykes – left the others behind, leap frogging in and out of the lead several times, battling down to the last turn for victory. In the first race, after a spectacular flying finish and after having even led the race for a while, Guintoli finished in fourth place behind Melandri, Sykes and Laverty.

The second race followed the same script, with the quartet running away at the front. After a less than perfect start, Guintoli pushed hard to claim the lead of the race, which he held for eight laps. In the final stages he could not keep the rhythm of the leading group and finished down in fourth, damaged by Sykes’ move on the last lap. Sylvain's podium was made official after Aprilia Racing lodged a complaint due to Sykes running straight on in a chicane during the last lap. Courtesy of these results, Guintoli strengthens his lead in the provisional chart, which he leads with a gap of 16 points on team mate Laverty.

Sylvain Guintoli: “What an exciting weekend! In Race 1 I felt like I was really fast until the halfway point and then my feeling dropped, so the fourth place finish was the most I could get. In the second race I had a better pace. The others were struggling a lot more to overtake me but in the last two laps I wasn't able to keep Eugene and Melandri's pace. The decision that was taken after Sykes' move seemed obvious to me immediately. I'm happy with third place even though I missed out on the podium celebration because the Team deserved it after working so hard. For the championship these are really important points”.

Good job for Jeremy Guarnoni in the Stock 1000, too: in an exciting race, the French rider was able to stay with the leading group for most of the race and in the end to make his move to conquer the second step of the podium.

Jeremy Guarnoni: “I’m so happy with this result, but it’s been hard out there today. My rivals were so fast and determined, but in the end I made it to the podium, which is the first one of this season. I hope to go on like this, I’m feeling strong at the moment and the bike is working very well!”.
