Ken De Dycker scored an absolute and undisputed triumph through the rough and rutty sand at Lierop for the Grand Prix of the Netherlands and the penultimate round of the MX1 Motocross World Championship.
The AXO and Suzuki factory rider glided to victory in both motos run in front of 18,000 spectators and under sunny skies. It was the second win of the season for the Belgian and he was only denied a 'perfect set' across the weekend when he was second in the morning warm-up!
De Dycker, who confirmed his fourth pole position of 2009 on Saturday with a dominant performance that saw him fastest in both practice sessions and then peerless in the Qualification Heat, took the lead early in both sprints across the rough and technical sand and was able to animate the many Belgian fans in the crowd with a comfortable speed and advantage. The 25 year old is now 5th in the world championship standings and just 4 points away from 3rd place, with only one race left to go.
Ken De Dycker: "I was having so much fun out there and it really helped me. It was not so easy because the track was so demanding and coming up to lapped riders I really had to concentrate. Sometimes I could look around and saw a lot of people cheering so I was waving to them when I could; it was a really nice experience. This was not a simple GP so I am really pleased with the result."
At the same time, at Indianapolis, Bradley Smith clinched the second step of the podium of what turned out to be a thrilling 125cc race: the Oxford teen-ager made his appearance on the podium after a three races absence, while Team mates Julian Simon and Sergio Gadea could only manage to finish fifth and fifteenth respectively. Simon holds his lead in the title chase with a 52.5 point advantage.
Bradley Smith: "I think that today's result was very positive, because I finished ahead of every rider that was above me in the championship standings. It's been a while since I was last on the podium, and I think that I really needed this. I hope that we can keep up this form at Misano next weekend. At one point in the race I doubted whether I could take a podium, because we were truly at the limit all the time. It was tough to keep up the pace, let alone overtake. Nico was very combative during the race, so passing him on the last lap with a circuit record was a big achievement for me. A little mistake on the entry to the home straight stopped me from fighting with Espargaró. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take the victory, but I hope to be in shape to try again next Sunday. Second place has helped to motivate me, and it will keep me focused for the upcoming races."
Chris Vermeulen in MotoGP had un unlucky race, as he had two collisions and had to came back to 11th spot.
